Bibliometric Analysis of ‘Women and Tourism’ Studies with Visual Mapping Technique

Abstract

Women's studies have become popular area in recent times as a reflection of the sensitivity to gender equality. The tourism sector is a part of the service sector and significant part of the work is women oriented. In addition to its labor-intensive structure, tourism also shows a "womanintensive" feature. Due to continuous growth of tourism and contribution positive effects to socioeconomic development of individuals, it has been an increase sein studies dealing with “women and tourism" topics together. A content analysis on the concepts of "women" and "tourism" has been performed using the Bibliometric method and Vosviewer programme. Within the scope of the study, 3245 studies obtained from the Web of Science data platform and analyzed using visual mapping technique. According to the co-occurrence analysis made on the keywords of studies, six different themes were determined and these were grouped as Tourism, Gender, Cross-Border Reproductive Care, Motivation, Sustainable Tourism and Segmentation. The obtained document type within the scope of their search is the article. It has been determined that the issue of women is mainly studied in the accommodation enterprises. In literature, women-oriented studies started in 1975 and increased after 2010. According to research findings women in tourism are predominantly determined on glass ceiling barriers, wage discrimination, working departments and their roles in management levels.
