Sustainable Tourism and Ecotourism in the Last 30 Years: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine academic articles on sustainable tourism and ecotourism within the framework of a descriptive analysis. The study focused on articles and review articles published on sustainable tourism and ecotourism in the Web of Science database between 1994 and 2023. A total of 763 articles were reached using bibliometric analysis method. The articles were analyzed according to criteria such as publication year, journals, countries, organizations, top contributing articles, authors and universities. VOSviewer 1.6.20 program was used to create a visual network map from the data obtained. The study aims to provide a set of intellectual knowledge and maps showing their relationships that can be useful for understanding and shaping the issues of sustainable tourism and ecotourism and the relationship between them. The results show that interest in sustainable tourism and ecotourism has grown significantly in recent years. Intensive research in these fields has contributed to ecological conservation, the empowerment of local communities, and economic development, while also fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and international co-authorship.
